What Makes Up Our Body’s Endocrine System?

Health Reference

The endocrine system is a complex feedback system that signals the hormones when they leave the glands and enter the bloodstream.

The human endocrine system consists of numerous glands. These glands produce and release hormones that control the body’s metabolism, growth, sexual function, mood, and energy function.

Below is a list of glands in the human body and their function:

  • Adrenal glands- their glands are located atop the kidneys. The Adrenal gland secretes life essential hormones. These hormones include corticosteroids and catecholamines. The adrenal glands also produce androgens. The androgens that made up male sex hormones, testosterone, and aldosterone. that promote the development of male characteristics. Testosterone is the major androgen.
  • Hypothalamus – can be found right above the brain stem. This gland controls the body function such as sleep, temperature, and appetite.
  • Ovaries, female and testicles, male- these organs control sexual function and sexual development.
  • Hypothalamus – located in the abdomen. The pancreas is an endocrine gland that produces insulin, somatostatin, and glucagon. The insulin released by the pancreas plays a role in breaking down the body’s carbohydrates.
  • Parathyroid glands – small endocrine glands located in the neck. They produce parathyroid hormone, which regulates calcium and phosphorous in the blood, blood clotting, and neuromuscular excitation.
  • Pineal gland- is located near the pituitary gland. The gland is believed to help control our body’s sleep patterns by relapsing melatonin.
  • Pituitary gland – an endocrine gland located at the base of the brain right off of the Hypothalamus. It is also known as the Master Gland and is made up of two parts the anterior and posterior. The Master Gland regulates numerous other glands.
  • Thymus gland – an endocrine gland located below the breastbone. The thymus gland interacts with the body’s T cells and plays a role in the body’s immune system.
  • Thyroid gland – the butterfly shaped endocrine gland can be found in the neck region. The thyroid gland plays a sufficient role in the regulation of the body’s blood pressure, heart rate and how the body metabolizes. The thyroid gland consists of two major hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine.

The endocrine system appears to be a subjective feedback system in where one gland regulates others.

I hope the explanation to the different endocrine glands helped explain the what makes up our body’s endocrine systems.
